Home Solar Powered Salt
March 2nd, 2009
One of the big problems with home solar power is generating sufficient energy during the hours of darkness. Solar cells just don’t work when it’s dark. Thus we need to store energy for use during the night. Once you start getting batteries involved then the cost and complexity rises. Batteries have a relatively short life and high maintenance costs.
Often it’s better to consider a central solar thermal system which uses the heat from the sun to turn a conventional turbine generator. But again, you still need energy after the sun goes down.
Here’s one idea for storing solar heat using common or garden salt. Specifically melted salt which can store vast amounts of thermal energy long into the night.
