Living Off The Grid - Is It Really Possible?

June 29th, 2009

The shortage of power, the rapid consumption of non-renewable energy, the ever-increasing demand for power supply, the daily warnings about our environment are enough signs to tell us that its time we do something.

Not a healthy situation. But what can we do to help? Well, what we can do, is to start living off the grid. Startling proposal? Not at all. If we could all start living off the grid, not only would we save ourselves tons of money on the electricity bills. We would be making a valuable contribution to cleaning up our environment, which in turn could help in saving our planet.

But what does it mean to live off the grid?

As you are well aware, you get your electricity via cables from the power suppliers. You can see the electrical pylons virtually everywhere you go. They supply electricity to all the states, cities and homes. This infrastructure is commonly referred to as the power grid. The same applies to all the other services like water, sewage etc.

So, by living off the grid we would become self sufficient in some of the areas of the needed services and would therefore not be dependent on the companies supplying these services.

Let us first study a few of the advantages of living off the grid.

1. We would reduce our dependency on some of the resources that are being rapidly exhausted. Living off the grid would in essence mean that we would rely only on the abundant natural resources. After all, do you want to be dependent on the government and corporation services for all time?

How often have you cursed when faced with a power outage in the midst of some important work or a party? Wouldn’t you like to take charge of such factors affecting you life? With alternate power solutions, you can.

2. With the abundance of naturally available resources. You would have complete freedom to use as much of this natural power as you wish. Without having to worry about your electricity bill.

3. Which bring us to maybe the greatest advantage to you personally. The reduction of your electricity costs. Which in turn would save you money. If you became self sufficient by making use of alternate natural power. You would no longer receive electricity bills.

4. Creating a greener planet and healthier environment. By reducing the usage of the dwindling non-renewable resources. We would play a part in ensuring that the future of our future generations is secure.

If you are thinking it is not very feasible to live off the grid, look for alternate power solutions and you will be surprised to learn that they are not only cost-effective but also extremely feasible.
